Chipmunk Punk is an album by the Chipmunks, as well as being the first album released by Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., after he took over the voices of the Chipmunks after the death of his father in 1972. Despite the title of the album, none of the songs listed are considered to be in the style of real punk rock music. It was released on June 15, 1980 (see 1980 in music). The album peaked at #34 on the Billboard 200. It was certified gold by the RIAA on October 14, 1980, becoming the Chipmunks' first gold record. In 2005, it was re-released on CD, although the CD was only available through the official Chipmunks website.

History[edit]
The inspiration for the album came when KMETDJ Chuck Taylor played the 12' version of the Blondie song 'Call Me' at double speed and announced, in jest, that it was the Chipmunks' latest single. So many requests came for this 'new' Chipmunks release, that Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his collaborator Steve Vining rushed to record this album.
In addition to 'Call Me,' the album featured covers of songs by The Knack ('My Sharona,' 'Good Girls Don't,' 'Frustrated'), The Cars ('Let's Go'), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ('Refugee'), Billy Joel ('You May Be Right'), Queen ('Crazy Little Thing Called Love'), and Linda Ronstadt ('How Do I Make You').

Chipmunk Punk marked the rebirth of the Chipmunk franchise. It was the first new Chipmunk release since 1969's The Chipmunks Go To The Movies. Previous Chipmunk activity ceased in 1972 with the untimely death of franchise creator/producer Ross Bagdasarian Sr. (also known as David Seville) from a heart attack.
Though this release followed a long dormancy record-wise, the characters had returned to public view via Saturday morning repeats of the cartoon series The Alvin Show on NBC in 1979. The album sparked a second run of the characters and led to another Saturday morning cartoon series, Alvin and the Chipmunks, which began in 1983 and also aired on NBC.

Allmusic | [1] |
The album met mixed critical reviews. Allmusic gives it three out of five stars, calling it 'good clean fun' which 'If nothing else...provides a portrait of a prime period in radio,' but Rolling Stone roundly panned it, describing the album as a symptom of corporate greed in the world of television animation.
Most reviews of Chipmunk Punk comment on or criticize the track listing as featuring comparatively little punk rock in favor of more commercial pop rock and new wave music of the era.[citation needed] In 1994, comedy punk band The Radioactive Chicken Heads recorded a cover of Suicidal Tendencies' 'Institutionalized' in the style of Alvin and the Chipmunks specifically due to lead singer Carrot Topp's dissatisfaction with the song choices on Chipmunk Punk.

Chipmunks On 16 Speed Download
Building off of Alvin and the Chipmunks' 1999 release Greatest Hits: Still Squeaky After All These Years, this 2008 update complements the original CD with a dozen selections from its late -'90s predecessor for a total of 26 vintage slices of innocuous pop novelty kitsch. The vari-speed borne Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were all alter egos of multimedia mastermind Ross Bagdasarian. The inspiration for the names of the adolescent rodent cut-ups were actually derived from Liberty Records' personnel Al Bennett (Alvin), Si Waronker (Simon), and recording engineer Ted Keep (Theodore). Bagdasarian kept himself in the mix as their keeper and tether to the 'real' world in his role as bachelor father to the trio. Counting their perpetually popular two volumes of seasonal cheer on Christmas with the Chipmunks, altogether there were 12 full-length LPs credited to the combo between 1958 and 1969, three of which landed in the charts. Typically, each LP would gather familiar pop, folk, and even a few rock & roll numbers and infuse them with a sense of carefree fun. This anthology gathers all the Top 40 entries 'Ragtime Cowboy Joe,' 'Alvin's Harmonica,' 'Alvin's Orchestra,' the 'chipmunk' re-recording of 'Witch Doctor,' and the holiday hit 'Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late).' Otherwise the nearly hour-long contents contain an above-average to excellent sampling of deeper album material that has not been featured on the various and sundry budget-line packages. Key among them are 'Chipmunk Fun,' 'Whistle While You Work,' and 'If You Love Me (Alouette),' from their debut Let's All Sing with the Chipmunks (1959). The follow-up album from 1960 yields'Sing Again with the Chipmunks,' 'Coming 'Round the Mountain,' 'Sing a Goofy Song,' 'I Wish I Had a Horse,' and the aforementioned 'Alvin's Orchestra.' 'Japanese Banana' and 'I Wish I Could Speak French' represent the multicultural Around the World with the Chipmunks (1961). 'Chipmunk Fun' as well as the 'Alvin Show Theme (Opening)' and closing 'Alvin Show Theme (Tag)' are fun reminders of the Alvin Show animated series that aired as a Wednesday night prime-time television series for 11 months (October 14, 1961 through September 12, 1962) on CBS-TV. The Chipmunks Songbook (1962) is the source for 'The Alvin Twist' and 'America the Beautiful,' while the Fab Four remakes of 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'She Loves You' can also be found on Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits (1964). The tunes 'Do-Re-Mi' and 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' are from the rarer Chipmunks Sing with Children (1965), spotlighting the Jimmy Joyce Singers as the young voices in question. The sole representative of the ultra-hip Chipmunks a Go-Go (1965) is 'I'm Henry the VIII, I Am.' Likewise 'Talk to the Animals' marks the only song off of The Chipmunks See Doctor Dolittle (1968). The last record to have been made by the senior Bagdasarian -- who passed away in 1972 -- was a gathering of cinematic music aptly monikered Chipmunks at the Movies (1969). Lastly, 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' -- which first surfaced on the aforementioned Chipmunks Sing with Children -- should not be missed. All said, Still Squeaky... is a worthy investment for the eternally young and nostalgic alike. ~ Lindsay Planer
